About the unit converter

One converter that covers the units people actually look up: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, digital storage and time. Conversions use exact ratios where an exact ratio exists, so an inch is precisely 25.4 millimetres rather than a rounded approximation. Results update as you type in either field, which makes it easy to work backwards from a target value.

How to use the unit converter

  1. Choose a category such as length, weight or temperature.
  2. Pick the unit you are converting from and the unit you want.
  3. Type a value into either field. The other side updates immediately.
  4. Copy the result, or swap the two units to reverse the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my temperature conversion not a simple multiplication?
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different scale sizes, so the conversion needs an offset: F = C x 9/5 + 32. Kelvin shares the Celsius degree size but starts at absolute zero, so it is C + 273.15.
What is the difference between a megabyte and a mebibyte?
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes using decimal prefixes, while a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes using binary prefixes. Storage manufacturers advertise in MB and GB, but operating systems often report in MiB and GiB, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB.
How accurate are these conversions?
Conversions use internationally defined ratios, which are exact for most length, weight and volume units. Results are displayed to a sensible number of significant figures rather than the full floating point value.
