About the tip calculator

The math is simple until you are doing it at a table with everyone waiting. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage from the presets or type your own, set how many people are splitting it, and the per-person figure appears immediately. There is a rounding option for when you would rather everyone paid a clean number, and the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal if you enter one, which is the convention in most of the United States.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
It varies enormously by country. In the United States, 18 to 20 percent is the current norm for table service. Much of Europe includes service in the bill and rounding up is sufficient. In Japan, tipping is not customary and can cause confusion. Check local convention before travelling.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the technically correct convention in the United States, though many people simply use the total for convenience. On a typical bill the difference is small, usually well under a dollar per person.
How do I split a bill when people ordered very differently?
Enter each person subtotal separately and apply the same tip percentage to each, rather than dividing the grand total evenly. An even split is faster but quietly overcharges whoever had the salad.
